I am delighted to announce my participation in this year's The Big Draw's Big Splash on September 25th.

The matchbox workshop will be taking on an underwater theme as participants will be asked to make miniature marine masterpieces. Think sea monsters, giant squid and deep sea divers.

Quentin Blake will be launching the event at noon, arriving via tugboat to cut the ribbon spanning Islington’s Battlebridge Basin. Workshops will be running throughout the day including appearances from M arion Deuchars and Hervé Tullet.

The free family event will transform Kings Place and its surrounding canal side into a vast collective studio full of opportunities for creative fun.

I hope to see you at this day long drawing extravaganza!

The Candlelit Matinee at The Apple Cart

Here are some images from Sunday's workshop at The Apple Cart.

Playing up to the fairytale element of the event, participants were asked to use a matchbox to make something you might find in a magical forest.

By the end of the day we had a forest full of giants, witches, owls, haunted houses and sleepy hollow style trees. For the first time I designated a space to show off everyone's creations. This worked really well and acted as a source of inspiration for new participants.

The workshop was part of The Candlelit Matinee, an interactive arts event ran by community arts charity The House of Fairytales.

Highlights included shadow puppetry with The Little Theatre of Dolls, printing and drawing with kids’ arts and science magazine Okido and silent movie making with BFI Education.

The Apple Cart

This Sunday, I'll be bringing my matchbox workshop to The Apple Cart in Victoria Park, East London.

In preparation, I've been making lot's of colourful cardboard props, including a giant life-size matchbox complete with matchsticks (pics to follow)

The Apple Cart is a new London festival for music, comedy, art, cabaret and magic which aims to create a kaleidoscopic, colourful playground for adults and children alike.

Organised by the fantastic House of Fairytales, the workshop will be part of The Candlelit Matinee, a fully interactive arts experience which festival goers can dip into or enjoy all day.

It looks set to be a great event!

My talented brother Adam recently had a solo show there and the space is beautiful.

Last weekends workshop with The Big Draw at St. Helen's Place was a great success. Thanks to everyone who came along and had a go - you can see some of the imaginative creations above.

I'm also excited to have been asked by the House of Fairytales to bring my matchbox workshop to one day festival Apple Cart in Victoria Park on the 7th August 2011.

Cartoon at the Silver Cloud Gallery

I'm delighted to have some new work featured in the Silver Cloud Gallery's third show entitled 'Cartoon'.

The opening is on Wednesday 6th July 6 - 9pm, and the show runs until the 28th July (viewing by appointment at all other times Monday - Saturday 12 - 6pm). The gallery is located on the second floor of Deutsche Bank's vacated New Broad Street premises, just behind Liverpool Street station.

Take A Closer Look with The Big Draw

On Sunday 10th July I will be running a workshop for The Big Draw as part of the fantastic City of London Festival.

Based on the matchbox workshop I ran recently at the British Museum, the session will be inspired by London's amazing cityscape and the City's newest sculptures by Anish Kapoor, Julian Opie, Franz West and Kenneth Armitage.

The workshop takes place from 12.00 till 5.00pm at St, Helen's Square, EC3 (nearest tube Liverpool St).

There are tonnes of great events going on in the Festival and The Big Draw has put together an exciting programme of drawing activities for people of all ages from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th July at Great St Helen’s and Undershaft.

All activities and materials are free!

Trans Siberian Travels

I've just come back from an epic adventure on the Trans Siberian Railway. It was truly awesome, inspiring and pretty much the most amazing thing I've ever done. I ate a hell of a lot of dumplings, fell in love with Siberian wooden houses and had the most fun ever cycling around hutongs in Beijing. Above are a few snaps but more photos of our incredible journey can be found on my flickr.

Matchbox Workshop at the British Museum

Yesterday I had great fun running a matchbox workshop at the British Museum as part of The Big Draw's Drawing Inspiration Awards.

The workshop was loosely based on the staple box series from my own practice. Participants were asked to choose a matchbox (or to make their own from a template) and then to simply build their own 3-D creation by cutting out and gluing together imagery and shapes from the printed papers provided.

There were some amazing creations and it was great to see the workshop being interpreted in so many different ways.

Big thanks to everyone who got involved; to ReachOutRCA for asking me to do this; to Landfill Editions for donating printed material destined for the recycling bin and also to the lovely and very talented Adam Hayes for all of his fantastic help.

ReachOut RCA workshop wins a Big Draw Award!

Recently, I found out the fantastic news that my ReachOutRCA workshop (together with ones ran by the brilliant Marie O' Connor and Silas Money) had won a highly commended prize in The Big Draw's Drawing Inspiration Awards.

In light of this (and because I've been meaning to for ages) I have posted up a few images from the second session of the workshop which was based in the Hockney Gallery at the Royal College of Art. During this session I asked the pupils to create their own miniature 'pop-up' worlds using matchboxes and other found objects as bases.

The results were amazing, being both super fun and highly imaginative. The pupils were a delight to work with; creative, curious and engaged. I was blown away by what was made and the whole thing was an absolute treat to be a part of.

Present & Correct's Christmas Pop-In Shop at House of Propellers

Last Thursday I went along to House of Propellers to see Present & Correct's Christmas pop-in shop. The gallery space has been transformed into a festive vintage school classroom, complete with tree, candy cane decorations, school desks and blackboard. The shop is selling a range of both new and carefully sourced vintage items, including rare and out of print books and posters, beautiful paper garlands and Christmas cards. So much papery goodness! I was particularly excited to see my Christmas mobile in the space. Big thanks to the lovely guys at P&C for asking me to contribute.

The shop is open until 21 December and there will be another late night shopping event complete with mulled wine this coming Thursday. Well worth a visit.

I have a long been a huge fan of the fantastic Present and Correct and was thrilled when they asked me if I would like to make something for their festive pop-up shop which opens this Saturday 4 December. Here is a sneak preview of a Christmas mobile in the making. The shop promises to be a treasure trove of glorious paper goods. Definitely worth checking out!

Last week I went to a secondary school in North London to teach a workshop about collage and the idea of drawing three-dimensionally with paper. It was great to see the pupils so engaged with the work and there were some fantastic creations. I'm really excited to be working with the same group at the Royal College of Art this week and can't wait to see what everyone will come up with. On Friday evening there will be a private view in the Hockney Gallery at the college to showcase all of the work produced. Come along if you can!

Well Being Commission Installed

This week my hoarding commission for UCLH Arts entitled Play was installed along with the other fourteen art works on Huntley Street in London, W1.

In June 2010 to coincide with the building of UCLH Foundation Trust's new Cancer Centre, UCLH Arts commissioned fifteen artists to create work on the theme of well being. For the next year and a half these works will decorate the external hoarding of the Cancer Centre as it is being built.

The other fourteen artists who created work for the project were Adam Hayes, Fiona Hepburn, Matthew Green, Andrew Curtis, Tom Leighton, Lucy Gough, Edd Pearman, Anthony Burrill, Sarah Bridgland, Jack Kettlewell, Abigail Hunt and Kieren Reed, Erica Donovan, Jess Wilson and Jane Ward.

All the artworks will be created into limited edition prints that will form part of the permanent art collection within the Cancer Centre once completed in 2011. For further information about Art at UCLH or the commissions please contact Arts Curator, Guy Noble: guy.noble@uclh.nhs.uk

The Jolly (Good) Show

Tomorrow night sees the opening of 'The Jolly (Good) Show' at the Collyer Bristow Gallery, featuring my work alongside some really interesting pieces from the other participating artists. The show has a distinctly folksy feel (think Wicker Man and Morris Dancing) with the space inhabited by some some strange looking creatures/objects . . . A highlight for me is a BMX completely covered in sprinklies - good enough to eat! The show runs until December 1st, hope you can make it!

UCLH Wellness Commission

I was recently commissioned along with 16 other artists to make a piece of work for the UCLH Arts Cancer Centre Hoarding Project 2010. The piece is a response to the theme of wellness and will be printed on to large scale hoardings that will be displayed around the building of the new International Cancer Centre on Huntley Street, London, W1. The work is to be installed and unveiled in September 2010. Photos to follow . . .

Philbrook Museum of Art Commission

At last years NADA fair in Miami I was commissioned to make some work for the Philbrook Museum of Art and a piece for one of the museum's curators. And finally here it is! The museum looks amazing - it's an Italian Renaissance villa designed in 1926 for oilman Waite-Philips who later went on to donate the mansion and it's grounds as an art centre to the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. I'm so thrilled to have my first piece in such a prestigious public collection and someday soon I hope to take a trip stateside to visit the museum and it's beautiful gardens!

I've been meaning to make an image of my work into a print for a while now. So I was really happy to be able to work with Jealous Print Studio in north London to realise this ambition. Using an existing image I made a four colour separation limited edition screen print with gloss varnish. It's great to see my work come full circle and find itself back in print form after it's origins as tiny cut-up printed matter. The print is available through man and eve and will be exhibited alongside new sculptural work at ART HK 10 ( see below)
